Happy new year to you all! How many of you ended 2022 and started 2023 by saying ‘new year new me’… Don’t be shy, I know the majority of you reading this have said it at least once!
And how many of you have said it each year before, to then go head first into the gym 5 days a week and cutting out all the ‘bad’ foods you ate over Christmas to lose ‘the Christmas weight’ to only stop within 2 to 3 months because something occurs or you are just not motivated enough?
We’ve all been there and done it, including me! It’s what the new year is sometimes known for, getting rid of the ‘bad’ of the last year and start fresh.. and don’t get me wrong, I’m all for that and pleased for you, but lets try a different approach
Thought about taking smaller steps? For instance:
- Start by scheduling 2 days at the gym, whilst slowly increasing your daily step count. Then progress this each week, from 2 sessions to 3 then 4 & then 5 days, whilst increasing your step count to 10,000+ a day as you go.
- Or look at maybe your sleep. Prioritizing your sleep could be very important to help your body with recovery, which when it comes to fat loss can be very important.
- Try switching out different foods each week and allow yourself a treat each day instead of going cold turkey with restrictions potentially leading to the typical weekend or ‘I’ve earned it binge’
As a coach with a year and a half industry experience and 6 years personal experience, I know how long the ‘new year, new me’ lasts, but also I have learnt how to change the habits to prevent the sudden full break halt on it to occur. And changing the small habits first can break the biggest changes in the long run!
I shall leave you with this passage from the book ‘Atomic habits’
‘Slight changes in daily habits help guide your life to a very different destination’ – James Clear
Your choice to go head first and give up soon or take your foot of the pedal for a while and achieve your goals and really achieve the new you.
